It’s that time of year again, time for the 2nd Annual Dirty Martini Holiday Party, a fundraiser for the Portland School Foundations First Octave Music and Arts in Schools Program. She’s taking time off from Throwing Muses and 50ft Wave to play a special acoustic set in support of the fund. holocene

Holocene presents a night of arty post-everything punk music featuring Montreal’s infamous Les Georges Leningrad. Fresh from the release of their new album Sur Les Traces de Black Eskimo, Les Georges have slimmed down to three-piece status and are truly in fighting form. Their music is hard to pin down, ranging from danceable artpunk to freeform noise and other nameless forms, all delivered with legenedary live intensity. They’re preceded by fellow Montreal sonic terrorists Duchess Says, Portland drums’n'vox power couple Romancing (featuring Charlie from Panther / The Planet The and Maggie from Bangs), and angular LA dancepunkers Hello Fever.
Monday November 27th @ Holocene. Tickets available from Brown Paper Tickets.com

lawrence williams

Dwight Adams, trumpet, kicked by Lawrence Williams.

This all-star evening pays tribute to the recently departed Detroit jazz legend Lawrence Williams, a nonpareil composer and drummer who lived in Portland for many years. A dear friend to vocalist Nancy King (another without-peer jazz sensation), and a mentor to many, Williams leaves a magisterial legacy that goes back to the good old days of Detroit, when GM was still cranking out flathead V8s and giants like the Jones boys (Elvin, Thad and Hank), Pepper Adams and Milt Jackson still roamed the earth. King joins an excellent cadre of jazz talent (led by saxophonist David Valdez) to salute Williams’ sophisticated, full-throttle, bop-tinged oeuvre. TIM DUROCHE. Jimmy Maks Friday Nov 17th. 8 pm. $8. 21+.

This local blog has more info on the project.

2006 rosey awards

Talking of Wieden + Kennedy, it’s that time of year again when the Portland ad agencies bounce their collective egos off each other as they vie for awards for their work in advertising. It’s an evening of fun, food and music and this year Pampelmoose artists, Dirty Martini grace the stage. The show is tonight, Thursday Nov 16th, at the newly-refurbished Portland Armory. Tickets can be purchased here.
