china forbes of pink martini releases debut album

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

China Forbes, the longtime lead singer of Pink Martini, releases her debut solo album February 26th on Heinz Records.

“On her long awaited solo album, ’78, Forbes dusts off her guitar and returns to her singer-songwriter roots. She recorded the album of strikingly personal songs in her hometown of Portland, Oregon with producer/drummer Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Wallflowers, Dandy Warhols). Backed by Williams on drums and multi-instrumentalist Eric Earley (Blitzen Trapper) with a cameo by Eric Matthews, Forbes played a variety of instruments, including guitar, piano, bass, harmonium and Wurlitzer.”

stephen malkmus & the shins’ james mercer play buckman school benefit

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Pitchfork reports - Stephen Malkmus and Shins frontman James Mercer will perform at Portland’s Jupiter Hotel on April 11 as a benefit for Buckman School and its Arts Focus programs. Performance artist Andrew Dickson will emcee the event, while a third, as yet unannounced music act will open.

The Buckman Bash is but one part of the 18th annual Buckman Art Show & Sell festival, which runs from April 11-12 at the school. And if this Buckman name keeps ringing bells, this isn’t the first time they’ve treated their young people to the beneficial effects of indie rockers. A swag auction this past spring featured contributions from the Decemberists, Isaac Brock, Mercer and his Shins, and Mr. Malkmus’ Jicks bandmate Janet Weiss.
