Portland’s Doubledutch release Dungn

Doubledutch Gungle Dungn

Yordan Bagnell of Typhoon and Dhani Rosa of Eskimo and Sons fame come together under the moniker Doubledutch. They’ve recorded an album due for release on August 31st entitled Gungle Dungn after the studio in which it was recorded. And in the spirit of utter and complete transparency Doubledutch explain the creative process that they apply.

Doubledutch works like this:

a. Yordan (she, her, hers) writes a song on guitar, piano, accordion, cello, viola or any other instrument she understands.
b. She records said song into her laptop using its internal microphone and GarageBand.
c. She opens the Firefox internet browser and logs into www.gmail.com assuming the identity of jordandoubledutch@gmail.com

Doubledutch CD Release Party

d. She types in something that makes no sense, like this: “hey dhani-here are some new things to listen to. The second one is really bare, and I couldn’t get my voice not to peak in the chorus without the rest sounding like a puddle. it’s too fast too. oh, and for the april 12th one, i was thinking you could sing it? only if you want to. i really want you to play your guitar on it though. sorry about the wierd glitchy noises. love, yordan”
e. She attaches said song to this “e-mail” and addresses “e-mail” to dhanidoubledutch@gmail.com.
f. Sending…
g. Later, Dhani (he, him, his) assumes the identity of dhanidoubledutch@gmail.com, receives “e-mail,” and reads.
h. He types something equally asinine in response, like this:
“Haha! That is some tight shit. I can’t believe you made that. That’s weed machine for sure. Come record that.”
i. Sending…
j. Days later, Yordan goes to the “Gungle Dungeon Recording Lair” where Dhani lives to record said song with super tech equipment and fresh gear using top-secret methods.
k. Dhani spends the next few months executing production work, which is also top-secret. The only thing known about it, is that he uses, primarily, two sound stretching techniques he pioneered. One is called “NoneYr” and the other is called “BeesWax.”
l. The whole process is repeated until a record has been created.

Gang of Four’s Dave Allen Joins Boy Eats Drum Machine, Talking Heads-Aaliyah-Van Halen-Cure Mashup, Live Show

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

My good friend Jon Ragel of Boy Eats Drum Machine invited me to “join” his band for a show at Portland’s Wonder Ballroom on Saturday August 16th. The premise being that it is a Talking Heads and Cure cover show! Ha! But put Jon and Dave in a room and you’re not going to get just any old cover songs…. This will be my first foray outside of Gang of Four in a long time and having worked so speedily Jon beats my other outfit Faux Hoax to the finish line. Jon explains the show details below:

BEDM Mashup

Hi PDX peeps! Boy Eats Drum Machine will be a part of Wonder Ballroom’s Talking Heads + Cure tribute night on Saturday 8/16. I’ve put together a live band lineup for the event, and instead of simply doing covers, we will be performing what I like to call ‘Live Mashups’. Myself (vox/turntable), Dave Allen (bass), Benjy Rickard (guitar/synth), and Paul Alcott (drums) will be tweaking Talking Heads and Cure songs over the grooves of Aaliyah, Michael Jackson, and Gang Of Four.

Below I have a live mashup to share with you. It’s got an Aaliyah groove with Talking Heads (Once In A Lifetime) and Cure (Lullaby) lyrics. There’s some Van Halen ‘Eruption’ guitar in there too.

Please feel free to share it with all of your pals. The idea is not only to spread love and musical goodness, but to promote the show a bit too. I mean, booking Dave for bass duties wasn’t cheap ya’ll! (Just kidding—love ya’ DA!) I will have another Live Mash to send you next week too. This time, with a Michael Jackson groove. I had hoped to get Paul into the basement last weekend to lay down some drums in order to finish it sooner but somehow his recent schedule performing with Dat’r, Dykeritz, Sweater, and Lackthereof got in the way. Paul. He’s a beaut. We’re going to have fun. Also, former full-time BEDM multiskilled multi-instrumentalist Benjy Rickard is laying down the guitar and synth. Yes, Benjy has got multi-skillz.
