John and a dog.

John Askew is a busy man. His resumé is as long as my arm; recording producer and engineer, label owner (Film Guerrero), multi-instrumentalist, solo artist (sort of, Tracker is the outfit) and now sidekick to me and Menomena’s Danny Seim in our new outfit Faux Hoax. In this interview John talks about the trials and travails of running a label whilst juggling most of the above on a daily basis. You’ll hear music from FilmG bands Mount Analog, Buellton, Manta Ray and Tracker.
UPDATE: Since talking to me John has a few new things under his belt - not least the specially-priced Menomena package from Film G that includes all three release from Menomena on FilmG. He’s also releasing Nonesuch recording artist Laura Veirs’ new album “Saltbreakers” deluxe edition 180 gram vinyl. As well as Menomena’s - Friend and Foe Deluxe Edition vinyl 180 gram due Summer 2007. And somewhere in this tight schedule will be the new Faux Hoax album. And he tells me he just got confirmation that he’s going to score and do the music supervision for the new Steve Zahn movie (co-star Chris Marquette) called “Calvin Marshall”. Last but not least he’s been in the studio recording Wow and Flutter ’s new album. Yikes!!

portland’s modest mouse crack #1 on billboard

Got fish?.

Modest Mouse post enough sales, 129,000, to get the top spot on Billboard this week. As Pitchfork said, the drop in CD sales has really helped indie bands do well on the charts, although I wouldn’t call Modest Mouse an indie band any more. Apparently they are the first band to make number one with iTunes as the single biggest retail store! Check out their video, built by Motion Theory, here.

Last night at the Roseland Portland’s very own Lifesavas very heavily rocked the house. In fact it was a night of all around great hip-hop with Andre Nickatina and Jmack. Anyway, back to the Lifesavas. Their brand new CD Gutterfly drops April 21st on Quannum Records. Check out this cut, Dead Ones featuring Fishbone, click play below.

El Perro del Mar was founded in the end of 2003 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The sole member of El Perro del Mar, Sarah, initially started out as an mp3/cdr-artist and released her first songs on the Swedish label Hybris. In November 2004 El Perro del Mar released the three-track EP ‘What’s New? El perro del mar’ which included the songs ‘This Loneliness, ‘It’s all good’ and ‘I can’t talk about it’. She also worked together with Swedish Jens Lekman and together they released a split vinyl single on which Sarah contributed with the song ‘Shake it off’. In Spring 2005 the previously but somewhat oddly released tunes were collected and turned into the album ‘Look! It’s El Perro del Mar’.
